The Castaway Clothing Co.
The Castaway Clothing Co. is a clothing brand/identity solution that deals with those driven to seafaring activities (i.e. fisherman, divers, sailors, boaters, and all around adventurers). This is a longstanding company (est. 1976)
with the soul purpose of providing a type of clothing that is: durable, dependable, and long lasting.
For this design I looked at what drives individuals to either work at sea or engage in seafaring activites. From there, I produced a design brief that correlated with an outline of my target audience and the overall feel of the brand. After that I wrote copy that spoke directly to individuals with that special connection to the sea, and created a character-based logo that confidently looks upon the sea as a both a guardian for all his fellow crewmates and seafaring individuals.
As an added research component, I looked at Ivan Aivazovsky's work, a Russian Romantic painter known for his great maritime works, as the inspiration behind the tages texture and painterly qualities. The tages also use text to orchestrate the feeling of calm and a deep sense of longing that, through my research, many riggers and sailors have historically come to say about the sea and life on it.
